On July 18, Helen Owens, a dispatcher with the Bernie Police Department, retired after nine years of employment with the City of Bernie. A party was given in her honor where she was given a plaque from Chief of Police Justin Allen on behalf of the Bernie Police Department and the City of Bernie. She was also given a fishing pole from the employees. In attendance were members of the Bernie Police Department, members of her family, Judge Norman Swafford and his wife, Linda Jennings, David and Maggie Teeters, and Councilman Ivan Mekan.
During her employment with the Bernie Police Department, Helen, received training from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, earning her MULES certification, as well as certification through the APCO Basic Communications class.
